Product Description:
The Canadian Gold Maple Leaf is a unique coin and a great addition to any gold portfolio. Minted without base metal, this 24-karat gold coin is one of the purest bullion coins in the world. It is one of the most popular for this reason.
First minted in 1979, the coin is produced by the Royal Canadian Mint. It is considered Canadian legal tender and is available in various denominations.
Maple leafs minted from 1979 to 1982 are 0.999 gold
After 1982, purity increased to 0.9999 gold
The coin depicts Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II on one side, with the Canadian Maple Leaf on the other. (The maple leaf has long been a national symbol of Canada.)
The Canadian Gold Maple Leaf stands out not only for its purity but also for its advanced security features. Both sides of the coin boast radial lines that are micro-inscribed, a cutting-edge security innovation pioneered by the Royal Canadian Mint. These intricate lines not only enhance the coin’s visual appeal but also serve as a formidable deterrent against counterfeiting, providing peace of mind for investors and collectors alike.
More Facts About the Canadian Maple Leaf Coin:
- Coins produced from 1979 to 1981 feature artwork by Arnold Machin. In this coin, the Queen is shown with a tiara of jewels.
- In 1990, the Queen’s portrait was updated, this time by Dora de Pedery-Hunt. This version was used until the Queen’s Golden Jubilee in 2002.
- In 2003, Suzanna Blunt redesigned the Queen’s portrait once again. This portrayal presents a more contemporary and elegant representation of the Queen, with a more mature depiction than earlier renditions.
- Inscriptions on this side typically include “ELIZABETH II,” “5 DOLLARS” (denomination), and the year “2003.”
While these Canadian Maple Leaf coins were not in circulation, they are still considered legal tender in Canada per the Canadian Currency Act. In this capacity, they are only worth their face value. In reality, their market value is influenced by the price of gold as well as supply and demand.
One interesting note: the Royal Canadian Mint frequently issues commemorative coins. One minted was a million-dollar Gold Maple Leaf. It was meant to serve as a promotional piece with a face value of $1 million Canadian dollars. The coin weighed 100 kilograms. To date, at least five of these were actually ordered and created.
These coins are approved for purchase in a Precious Metals IRA.
