Article Synopsis

ndonesia has officially joined the BRICS bloc of developing economies, as announced by Brazil, the group’s 2025 presiding country. Indonesia’s membership, endorsed by BRICS leaders in August 2023, was formalized under its newly elected government.
As Southeast Asia’s largest economy and most populous nation, Indonesia shares BRICS’ goals of reforming global governance and fostering South-South cooperation. Its foreign ministry described the move as a strategic step to enhance collaboration with other developing nations based on equality, respect, and sustainable development. BRICS, formed as a counterweight to the G7, now represents nearly 45% of the global population and 35% of GDP by purchasing power parity.
