About the American Gold Buffalo Coin:

The Gold American Buffalo bullion coin was the first 24-karat bullion coin produced by the U.S. Mint.

This coin was authorized in 2005 under legislation known as the Presidential $1 Coin Act.  At the time, many Americans looked overseas for 24 karat gold coins.  The American Buffalo coin provided a domestic option. It grew in popularity over the American Gold Eagle coin, which was only 91.67% gold.

The Gold American Buffalo coin provided a convenient and domestic alternative, allowing investors to access high-purity gold without looking beyond U.S. borders.

More Facts About the American Gold Buffalo Coin:

  • Introduced in 2006, this coin uses images by James Earle Fraser, an American sculptor who also designed the U.S. Nickel.
  • A testament to the American West, the front of the coin includes an image depicting a blend of Native American Chiefs: Big Tree, Iron Tail and Two Moons. The word “liberty” is engraved next to the picture.
  • The coin’s reverse features an American bison, believed to be inspired by the famous “Black Diamond,” a bison from the New York City Zoological Gardens in the 1910s. It includes inscriptions like “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “E PLURIBUS UNUM,” and “IN GOD WE TRUST” above the bison’s head, with “$50” and “.9999 FINE GOLD” at the bottom.
  • The coin is offered at a face value of $5, $10, $25, and $50.

As the first pure gold coin to be introduced in North America, the American Buffalo coin makes a unique addition to your gold portfolio.
